Joining Troop 2018

We are an active, fun, and welcoming Scouts BSA Troop from Edgewater, Maryland…just for girls! We meet a few Friday evenings a month at Wild Kid Acres. Email us for more information or to come check us out.

Youth may join a Scouts BSA Troop when they are between the ages of 11 and not yet 18, OR are at least 10 years old in March of their 5th grade year, OR have earned their Cub Scout Arrow of Light rank and are at least 10 years old.

Registration Fees and Troop Dues

To register with us, go here: https://my.scouting.org/VES/OnlineReg/1.0.0/?tu=UF-MB-220taa2018, or go to BeAScout.org and search by zip code 21037 to register and pay online with a credit card. When you register, youth will need to pay a national membership fee, plus a council fee, all in one.

Troop 2018 does charge dues each year. The Troop does not receive any of the money for National and Council fees, so in order for the Troop to operate, we charge dues for the basics and then fundraise for extras. Dues are typically $75 in the Spring and $75 in the Fall. Dues and fundraising cover troop costs like meeting supplies, trailer and gear maintenance, camping firewood, new tents, replacement of worn camping gear, and awards and other recognitions.

Troop 2018 completes their annual plan for the upcoming year each Fall. The Scouts decide where they want to camp, what merit badges they want to work on, what activities they want to take part in, etc. We split the dues up to half in the Spring and half in the Fall to make it easier on families.

With our fundraisers, some of the money goes to the individual scout accounts of the Scouts who participate. This helps them pay for higher adventure trips. In 2021, we took a crew to Sea Base, in 2022 we took a crew to Philmont, and in 2025, we took 2 crews to Sea Base. If families don’t wish to take part in fundraisers, they don’t have to. If families want their Scouts to pay their own way (we love to see this!) then they can join in with the troop and raise money for their Scouting adventures!

Our dues do not cover food costs for campouts, so each camper attending a campout will generally need to bring $20 for food each time. Summer camp and High Adventure programs are separate costs.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us. We firmly believe that Scouting is a great value and indeed it is still less expensive than many clubs and sports teams. We also believe that no one should be priced out of the Scouting program. Troop 2018 does offer Scouterships to those who feel they cannot afford the fees and dues. Ask the troop treasurer about Scouterships if this would help your daughter stay in Scouting. Scouterships are always kept in confidence.

The Dorsey Road Scout shop up by BWI is a great place to get uniform items and supplies. When your daughter joins and pays her dues, she will receive a troop number patch, green shoulder loops, neckerchief, joining slide, and Scout Handbook. (That’s most of your $75 dues right there!) We make our own troop activity t-shirts, so stop at Michael’s on the way back to pick up 1 or 2 burgundy Gildan T’s to paint with the troop logos at an upcoming meeting. You can also pick up T’s for adult troop volunteers, moms and dad, and even siblings while you are there!
