Part of a Legacy…and creating a new one

Our Troop 2018 Campfire Ashes

Our troop attended the 2020 Great Virtual Camporee and has joined our campfire ashes by mail with some others with an amazing pedigree. They used to have a website posted about the history of their ashes, but that website no longer exists. We sent some of our ashes out to the West Coast to their fire circle, and they sent us some of theirs after the event. The ashes that they sent to us were added in to ours at the next campfire when we finally camped in person again after the COVID-19 lockdown. Their ashes could be traced back over 100 years to the days of Baden Powell. (They were not able to trace back to any of his actual campfires, but they were able to go back that far to Scouting activities when he was actively Scouting!)

The legacy of OUR Troop 2019 campfire ashes…

On our first campout on February 9, 2019, we started a tradition of saving ashes from our campfire, and every time we have a campfire, we bring that camping legacy with us and sprinkle it back in the fire. Each Scout gets an ash container after her first troop campfire. At the end of the campfire when the ashes are cool, we refill our ash containers with the combined ashes to bring a little bit of every one of our trips with us. We don’t get to have a campfire every time we camp, but we try to continue this tradition when we do.
